So. You have those rugs that I deem necessary, like the winter rugs and raincoat. Then you have those that you buy because you see it on sale and buy it while you do not really need it.
This walker rug from Rambo – Horseware was definitely one of those buys. I saw it on sale this summer and for some reason I really felt I needed it. Since it was pouring down today I took it for a test ride when walking to the lunging arena and walking about afterwards. To be honest the rug is really well made as you can expect from Horseware. It got a fleece inside and a water repellant outer layer. I didn’t dare to lunge with it as I’m afraid Grumpy would get his feet in the surcingles. Although its nice, it’s not a rug that you need at all. I do like the way it makes Grumpy look like he is wearing a superman coat tough. hoho
On another note, Grumpy was really stiff and slow today. I can’t really blame him as it has been such bad weather and it suddenly went from a decent warmth to really freaking cold. Tomorrow he has a day off with cuddles and walks before we start training properly for the next two weeks before I can ride again. Almost there, almost there!
I am having the most lazy Sunday ever. After 3 days of busy socialising I’ve been spending the whole day on the sofa watching tv. Sometimes those are the best Sundays to be had. However the point of this post is to talk about Grumpy’s new rug and not my lazy ways.
As you can imagine, boyfriend did raise a brow when I bought this one. Considering my trunk is filled up to the brim with rugs he did not think I needed another one. I probably could have survived without, but I simply choose not to. haha
Since the summer has really stretched out here in the Netherlands, I felt I needed a rug that could cater to the cold mornings, but warmer days. In the beginning I did want to buy the 50 gram Bucas Celtic rug, but considering the price is above 100 euro, I felt I didn’t want to spend that much money on a rug that was only for a couple of weeks.
After thorough searching, I came across the new Highliner stable rug from Harry’s Horse. I’ve never owned any rugs from this line before, but several stable mates have had them and they always look good. It was more or less the only rug I could find that was 0 gram, had a fleece inner and was well put together. With 25% at Divoza, the rug turned out to be 50 euro. You might ask me why I didn’t just go for a summer rug, but I must admit I do not like the summer rugs on sale at the moment. The fabric of the Bucas one comes across terrible to me and I ended up giving away the one I had last year. This one feel like you get way more for your money.
As said it has a fleece inner, two surcingles under the belly as well as two around the back legs, and protection for neck and tail. I was really surprised of the quality for the price I paid. I did have to change it for a smaller size as they do fit very large, but the fit overall is very nice. Grumpy is normally a size 195, in this one he is a 185.
If you are looking for a rug for the months where the weather is really in between hot and cold this is a great rug for a good price.
ps. Not sponsored, bought it myself 🙂
Finally it’s almost time for check up number two. The vet is coming on Friday to see how Grumpy has developed since we started our lunge marathon a couple of weeks ago.
Besides that he is stretching a lot easier he has also started to move with a lot more elasticity. Some moments I can see glimpses of how he probably was moving before he got his back issues. Such a different horse!
Body wise he has started to build more muscles again and his back is a lot more straight then swayed as before the shots. When you lunge on the left side everything is really good, but when moving to the right side you notice he has issues moving his right back legs in the beginning. After some rounds on that side this is gone again tough. They do say it takes some time for the infuse to work, so maybe it will get better over time and with some training.
I wonder what the answer will be on Friday. On one side I really want to ride again, but on the other I want to wait till I know he can handle it. Till then we will keep marathoning.
“Giiive me more apples, it’s so good!”
Today was the first day of road to recovery and our lovely lunging marathon as I like to call it. I’ve decided that Grumpy is going to be rewarded with a forrest ride if we get so far that we can ride again. Cause seeing that lunging arena from the inside 10 days long is definitely not something I’m looking forward to.
But nonetheless it has to be done and today was day 1. I was wondering if I would see any difference right away, but didn’t really know what to expect.
The first thing I noticed was that he stretched his neck more or less from the beginning. Something he normally doesn’t do. After becoming warmed up he moved with more swung then normal as well. As I want to see the difference from day 1 till day 10 I took some photos. Looking forward to see if there will be any!
If there is one thing that I really and by really I mean really don’t like. Then it’s needles.
I thought that after watching countless of hours of Botched I would be able to handle the needles going into Grumpy today, but man. Those things are not normal.
The first sedation went positively Ok, he didn’t lift me up as much as he normally does. But let’s just say the rest wasn’t that much of a walk in the park. At a certain point I had to get out for some fresh air as my face was turning all kind of colors. Doesn’t help that I’ve got the worst flue ever. But hey, baby comes first.
Today Grumpy got 4 injections in his back with infection stopper. Then he got an infuse with a liquid that stops the bones from dissolving. For the next week I need to lunge 5 days without specific training tools and then the week after I need to lunge with training tools to make his back stronger. In the meanwhile I need to give him infection stoppers trough his food every day as well.
Luckily I have the sweetest boyfriend who held Grumpy’s head up for half an hour while the infuse was working. And a vet that can laugh of my dramatic ways. Haha
But we survived and that’s the most important.
Now that I finally know what’s wrong with Grumpy I can focus on recovery. Even tough I know I can’t take away the things he has, I want to make the rest of his years as nice as possible for him.
The one thing the vet told me before leaving the clinic was that it’s important that even if I can’t ride at the moment, Grumpy can’t stay to long in his box. The longer he stands still, the stiffer he will become. But how do you do that when you work 40 hours a week?
Luckily we are stabled at a full service stable which puts him in the paddock for a couple of hours every morning. Then around lunch time my boyfriend puts him in the walker and in the paddock for a little. At around 6 I finish work and I either lunge, let him go for another round in the paddock or try to make fun games with him and ending it with a walk.
It’s a bit of a commitment, but I’m already noticing he is becoming less stiff and moves better when lunging. Tomorrow I’m calling the vet for the appointment to set the injections. From there on we can start looking at building his muscles again. I can’t wait to see if it will work or not.
I got this picture from the stable this morning when they put Grumpy outside for his morning chat with his friends. So pretty!
I think we can all agree that this summer has been pretty much insane. And considering it likes to rain in the Netherlands I’ll try my best not to complain about it.
This weather has made me buy two things I never thought I would buy. Or I didn’t buy them, boyfriend was kind enough to go to the store while I was at work. So all props to him
First thing on the shopping list was a fly mask. Normally Grumpy doesn’t care to much about flies, but this year their exceptionally bad. As a fly mask newbie I had no idea what to buy, so I went for the mask below from Bucas. It’s the freedom fly mask which costs about 14.95 euro. Grumpy got a small head for a horse so he has size medium. They run rather big.
The second item he picked up was the Naf Electro lytes for electrolytes. Grumpy hasn’t sweated so much lately, so I have a feeling he is missing a bit of salt. It was the only one they had left at the store, so no idea if it’s great or not, but we shall see. He had no problem eating it and the packaging is easy to use. Costs 14.95 euro as well.
Hopefully these items will make Grumpies life a little better. He seemed to already enjoy the mask. No flies for us.
After a rather long day at work I was met at the stable by a loud whinny from Grumpy. If that doesn’t make you smile as a horse lover, then little will.
As I had one hour of sleep last night, he got a day off today. I’ll also make the excuse that this weather is a tad bit to warm for a Viking like me at the moment. Grumpy on the other hand seems to enjoy it loads and is becoming more awake by the day.
After having a walk in the walker and a shower I turned him out on the land. It took him exactly ten minutes before he wanted to come in again because of all the flies. So tomorrow I’m heading for the store for a flying mask. I’ve never had this issue before now, but there is so many flies at the moment it’s almost impossible not to get one.
I also must admit that the grumpy, Grumpy is gone. The “old” man is enjoying life and I rarely see him put his ears in his neck anymore. He is not a super fan of the mare beside him, but for the rest he says hello to everyone and wants to cuddle. It’s interesting to see how a change of scenery can change a horse so much. Today I put a bucket of carrots and apple juice/water outside and as he ate, a horse came close by. Before this would mean war and he would attack, but now he couldn’t care less and keeps eating.
Makes a horsemommy heart very happy.
How bad isn’t it that our mood gets so affected by our riding?
For the past month me and Grumpy has been on different planets. He went left when I wanted to go right and he stopped when I wanted to go forward. It was not sexy, not sexy at all.
Somewhere a long the lines I realized that I had been sleeping. The warm weather made me give him some more days off then I should have and generally I had been lazy. So I decided to get my shit together, in lack of different words and start working again.
Today I finally got a bit of payback for my work. For the last month it felt like I had to carry Grumpy, while today he decided to use his own legs. What a feeling. When he decides to do that, I don’t need to look like a wild monkey on his back either and can focus on sitting a bit better and hold my hands where they should be.
So back to my initial sentence. How happy don’t you feel when you’ve had a good ride? Gosh. I would almost pay to have a good ride every day. Haha
This weekend I was on a weekend away. As I lay with a nice drink in my hand on the beach(completely not relevant), I get a message from my boyfriend.
“Have you been shopping again? ”
Although I admit I can often go on a shopping spree I hadn’t ordered something in a while. So I asked him to send me a picture of the content of the box.
To my surprise is contained a clincher browband from Schockemohle that I ordered, wait for it:
2 bloody years ago.
I can’t believe it! I was on vacation in Marbella back then and looked all over the internet for this clincher. After hours of looking I found it on a Dutch webshop and decided to order it. After two weeks of waiting I sent an email, but never got an answer and afterwards I saw the site was down. I’ve got no idea why the shop decided to send it after two years, but I really don’t need it anymore.
Maybe I can make any of my readers happy? It’s a classic Schockemohle Clincher in gold, size Cob. Holla if your interested.
