This weekend I was on a weekend away. As I lay with a nice drink in my hand on the beach(completely not relevant), I get a message from my boyfriend.
“Have you been shopping again? ”
Although I admit I can often go on a shopping spree I hadn’t ordered something in a while. So I asked him to send me a picture of the content of the box.
To my surprise is contained a clincher browband from Schockemohle that I ordered, wait for it:
2 bloody years ago.
I can’t believe it! I was on vacation in Marbella back then and looked all over the internet for this clincher. After hours of looking I found it on a Dutch webshop and decided to order it. After two weeks of waiting I sent an email, but never got an answer and afterwards I saw the site was down. I’ve got no idea why the shop decided to send it after two years, but I really don’t need it anymore.
Maybe I can make any of my readers happy? It’s a classic Schockemohle Clincher in gold, size Cob. Holla if your interested.
Even tough I love the sun and the warm weather, I’ve noticed that Grumpy has become a bit dehydrated lately.
My instinct was to just to get him more water, but then I got a tip to mix a bit of apple juice in with the water to make it a bit sweeter. This way they drink even more. For a more fun element I added in a couple of apples and carrots. Needless to say, Grumpy had the time of his life drinking and eating it all up.
Quick and easy fix for this warm summer weather.
You know that feeling when your horse have been outside with his raincoat on, rolling around, having fun and then he/she comes in and you have to hang the rug over your other rugs which is hanging on your stable door? Making them all dirty as well.
I actually stole this tip from a stable friend who had hung up one. A rug bag for your stable door.
I bought mine from QHP a couple of weeks ago and it’s proving itself very useful. It’s super easy to click on your door and you can still slide the door open. The one on the picture above is currently carrying 3 different sweat rugs(yeah let’s not get into why I have 3 different ones), all staying nice and clean while the dirty rain coat can hang on top.
Here are some different options:
QHP – 21.95 euro
BR – 25 euro
Yep, I’ve made my own syndrome. Schoolrider syndrome is when you’ve been used to riding in group lessons and you move to a place where there is none and you forget how to horse ride. Sounds silly, but when your so used to ride around in circles, having someone tell you what to do every time, you become a lazy rider.
Now that I finally have a fitting saddle it was time to deal with the “I’m going to fool you all day long and not work” attitude of Grumpy. Which generally meant finding any possible way to make me work super hard, and not him.
Last week I started training properly with a trainer again and finally got the joy back in riding. It’s been so much back and forward that today I suddenly heard in the ear set “Maria I know your happy he is moving forward, but please remember to ride instead of just smiling” I totally had a moment of total blissfulness when feeling that he wanted to work again.
We are really far off from where we should be, but if things go like they do today we are on the right track. Hopefully by the end of the summer we can start thinking about competitions.(knock on wood).
I also got my first equestrian tan today. And gosh it ain’t pretty. Gotta love the gloveline. Hoho
Photos from another day, but this is generally our days right now. Enjoying and showering 🙂
What a day.
Today the saying trough blood, sweat and tears is fitting.
Well slightly dramatic, but at a certain point I thought Grumpy was ready for the green fields and could no longer be used as a riding horse.
I called the saddle fitter because my saddle didn’t fit Grumpy anymore. His body has changed a bit lately and he was letting me know with riding that he didn’t like the saddle anymore. I hoped that we could still fit it, but unfortunately not, so on I went on a “try every saddle in the universe” adventure.
Before we started I said to him “you must be such a patient person”, not knowing I was going to use 3 hours of his time to find a fitting saddle.
I started off rather positive, trying new saddles is always fun, but after the 8 one my patient started running out and I thought we would never get there. We tried literally every brand out there, but Grumpy wouldn’t move properly into trot. At a certain point he even had to go on the longe to check that he was ok.
Then someone walked by and said “why are you using this arena, the other one is so much better” and as both me and the saddle fitter was pulling our hairs out at this point we figured why not and on we went to the big arena which has a different underground. And yep, voila. The diva decided that everything was alright and decided to start moving. Pfft.
I can’t even express how happy I am that Kees Bregman is just as a perfectionist as me and kept trying till we found the right one. It was hard work, but we got there in the end. I’ll go an eat soup for the next 5 years now, but at least I can sit great and Grumpy can move without restriction.
It’s innovation time again. This time it’s coming from HV Polo with their correction pro top.
This top is meant to remind you to keep your shoulders back and your back straight with putting a slight pressure on it.
I’ll be the first to admit that I could use something like that. Whether or not it works I don’t dare to say, but my favorite breeches are from the HV polo pro range, so I know the top will definitely be of good quality. It comes in a breathable material and is figure slimming for those of us with a few extra pounds.
Can be bought at Epplejeck for 70 euro. There is a normal version as well as a show version.
Have you tried it? Does it work?
Hope you are all doing well!
A while back I heard about this new sport muesli called Ease and Excel from Pavo. Specially designed for horses with stomach problems. Recent tests have proved that a lot more horses then at first thought has stomach problems.
I’ve often thought that Grumpy had it too, that’s why I found this food quite interesting. He is a bit of a stressy one and his old food schedule wasn’t the best with quite long periods between feeding. I actually wasn’t aware that horses should eat every 4 hours to avoid stomach problems. This way they produce spit which again protects the stomach. However at the moment he is looking and feeling quite well so I am hesitant to change his feed.
I ordered a test package from Pavo for free to check out how it looked. It smells very rabbit food, but looks quite yummy, from a horse point of view. Haha. The muesli also have several other good vitamins and minerals to help the horse have a faster recovery after working.
Only a vet can check if your horse got stomach issues, but look for signs like tiredness, teethgrinding when not working, yawning a lot and light colic appearances. If your horse shows any of these signs this feed might be for you.
Let’s start this post with a disclaimer. If your horse is coughing and you don’t know why, you should go to the vet.
Last week the Netherlands decided to become a tropical paradise with 30 degrees and sun everyday. This was all fun and games until Grumpy decided he was going to start coughing his lunges out.
In case you don’t know, coughing is really bad for horses as it can rip the lounges apart or create long lasting issues. It’s therefore important that you deal with the issue quickly. In this case I knew Grumpy didn’t have a virus as he’s had this issue before. When it gets to warm in combination with dust he starts coughing.
Normally I call the vet and get a dose of Ventipulmin, but at the lovely cost of 150 euro all together I was hoping to find something else that would work. A stable mate recommended NAF respiratory boost to me, and I figured that I had nothing to loose so on I went to the shop to buy it.
And it works! Even within two days he was significantly better and now it’s almost gone. For a liter bottle you pay 50 euro which is a lot less then 150. Definitely worth a shot for those with horses that have dust allergies or bronchitis.
I remember when I told my teachers I was going to move to the Netherlands. One told me that I wouldn’t realize what I had around me until it was gone.
And he was right. I keep forgetting how beautiful norwegian nature is, till I land in Norway again. This weekend I went to celebrate my grandmother’s 80 birthday in my hometown. A place where the fjords, mountains and sea meets.
If I could only wake up to this everyday. It’s a shame it’s literally in the middle of nowhere haha.
Oh well. I missed my Grumpy buddy this weekend when I was gone. Unfortunately the saddle didn’t solve the problem with his bucking so I’ve now called the vet to come and give him a proper sports massage. From what I can see there is something stuck in his left shoulder which makes sense when I think about where the saddle was laying bad. So until the vet comes around next Tuesday we will lunge a lot and go for a lot of walks as I don’t want to pressure whatever is laying wrong more.
This week started with Grumpy giving me a flying lesson on Monday. Luckily it was a straight forward flying lesson so I didn’t fall off. However as he has never done such a thing before I figured something was wrong.
Either it was his body or his saddle, luckily for me I had already booked an appointment with my saddlefitter Kees Bregmans. He said right away that the saddle didn’t lay well anymore. Grumpy’s back has gotten a bit wider since last time so the saddle wasn’t laying how it should. I also didn’t feel I got the support from it that I was used to, but within ten minutes he had fixed this. What a difference. From the minute I stepped back on I could feel the difference right away.
If you live in the Netherlands and you need a saddlefitter, then I can wholeheartedly recommend Kees. Not only does he know what he is doing, but he is also social and kind to the horses and people. I also like that he is no stuffy old horse man, but a young and updated horse man. Today he showed me a new KN saddle for a client, gosh, if I had some more money…. he is also an official seller of Erreplus saddles for those that are interested in that brand. And no, I didn’t get paid to say this 😉
We seem to like people with the name Kees, cause after the first one came the second one came and fixed Grumpy’s shoes. So now Grumpy has new Dior shoes. The first Kees recommended to get Grumpy a massage as he was a bit tight in his body, so will call my vet on Tuesday to book an appointment. Then we should be all ready for the spring and summer!
I unfortunately can’t fix his head tough….. haha
