What to buy on sale

January is known for being the huge sales month in many countries. In the Netherlands several of the largest equestrian sites have their winter sales on at the moment.

I personally love sales(why wouldn’t you want to buy something for less money. Haha), but I do know there are people that find them to messy or don’t want to buy “outdated” product. However there are certain things that are really smart to buy on the big sales:

Saddle pads

I can’t remember the last time I bought a saddle pad at full price. I personally prefer the euro star pads, but at 70 euro I find them too expensive. So I buy a couple of them when the sales is on instead. Like this one for example:

Kingsland victor saddle pad. Normally 80,- now 40,- at Divoza

Show shirts

I don’t why, but seems that someone decided that showshirts should be redicolous expensive eventough their full of polyester(my favorite fabric -not). Show shirts change little season by season, so you can save quite a lot on buying them at the large sales in winter and summer. For example the ones at Kingsland haven’t changed all year. So why not buy them a bit cheaper?

Kingsland classic show shirt. Normally 45,- now 35,- at De Kroo.

Rugs

Winter rugs/ turnout rugs are definitely one of the most expensive things we can buy for our horses. Generally the rugs don’t change much from year to year. So if you know that you need a new one next year it can be smart to buy them on the winter sales instead of at the beginning of autumn. At the moment you can even get Bucas rugs up to 30% off which doesn’t happen a lot.

Bucas 300 gram smartex winter turnout rug – normally 255,- now 178, euro- at Dochorses

Halters

You always need halters and saving some dollars here and there on them is never bad. Their certainly not expensive, but buying them at 50% off feels better then buying them at full price no?

Schockemöhl Tennessee. Normally 17,95, now 8,98,- at Epplejeck

Boots

You need boots all year around, but generally they don’t go on sale as much the rest of the year as they do now. So why not buy some at 30-50% as a delayed Christmas gift for yourself?

Petrie Melbourne – normally 299,- now 199,- at Ooteman

Here you got a list of the sales going on at the moment or coming up:
Divoza – up to 50% off

Ooteman – special sale starts 15 January, for now 30% off

Dochorses – up to 30% off on rugs from Rambo, Amigo, Bucas

Schockemöhl – 50% off certain items

Epplejeck – winter sale with up to 50% starts Sunday 8 January

Steal of the week – Bucas anniversary turnout rug

So, a last steal of the week this year.

You can now buy this Bucas Anniversary turnout rug for only 49.99 euro(normally 99 euro) at Divoza

The rug is 200 gram and waterproof. So if you want Bucas quality for cheap money, this is a good deal.

Freezing nosetip

Today when laying far underneath my woolen blanket after dinner, I really felt like raising the white flag and just wave “it’s to bloody cold to go outside, I’m staying underneath here.”

Unfortunately owning a horse comes with some responsibilities. So after a bit of nagging I managed to get up and into the car. It is bloody cold tough. Mr.Grumpy is currently wearing a 450 gram stable rug together with a 300 gram neck. Even he was so cold today he didn’t flinch an eye when I put it on him again after training. Generally he goes into full diva mode and if your standing at the wrong position you’ll get a tooth or two into you. But today he was like hell yes, bring on the blanket. Ok, he didn’t actually say or portray that, but would be cool if he did. Haha

He even has a thicker neck on than this right now, but didn’t have a photo of it.

Lesson went so so, he was very frisky and strong, wouldn’t really take the bit that easy. I have an ugly tendency to become extremely stiff in my shoulders when he does that and I also forget to breath at the same time. Awesome combo. I’m currently very good at holding my breath, which we all know is a very useful competency to have.

As it was way to cold to hang around at the stable I hurried home to lay underneath my blanket again. Spending some time with my new little kitten. She’s so adorable!

Now we can celebrate that the “worst day” of the week is almost over 😉 onto the rest of it!

Review : Bucas Recuptex therapy rug

I first came across this rug about half a year ago. Bucas had just launched it and I found it very interesting for Mr.Grumpy as he has back problems. However due to the fact that I couldn’t find any comments or reviews about it online I was very hesitant to buy it. 170 euro is not something you want to spend on something that might not work.

However in the last few months, more and more riders/ physiotherapists / bloggers and vloggers have started using it and after reading some really good things about it I decided to give it a go. I’ve now used it for a couple of months, so it’s finally time to review it.

What is Bucas Recuptex therapy rug?

This is what Bucas says themselves: “Bucas has developed a brand new Recuptex Therapy rug which not only prevents numerous medical problems but can also help treat a vast array of ailments such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Muscle soreness
  • Soft tissue damage
  • Whither soreness
  • Kissing spine

The material is made from an extremely fine stainless steel mesh so acts like a Faraday Cage, reflecting the magnetic fields created inside the body. Preserving these fields stimulates blood circulation and oxygen flow in the horse’s body and back, which heals and reduces both swelling and inflammation and promotes faster healing.”

As most of you know, Mr.Grumpy has kissing spine at the back of his back. Specially when it gets cold you notice he has pain and becomes a lot stiffer. I decided to get the rug to relief his pain a bit and in hope that it would make him more supple and loose in his movements.

Here you can see the special material Bucas mentiones above.

Does it work?

Yes! With Mr.Grumpy I have definitely noticed a difference. The first time I used it I had a different horse while riding. He was a lot looser in his back.

I put it on him 30 min before riding and leave it on after for as long as I am at the stable. Bucas recommends using it up to two hours before and two hours after. After I got this rug Mr.Grumpy has grown a lot more muscles and generally seem a lot more fit. I don’t think that’s all because of this rug, but it has definitely helped him. His back is also a lot less stiff and painful. When you put it on you’ll notice the back of your horse will be a lot warmer due to the rug.

Another good thing about it is that it’s also a cooler, so you don’t have to use another rug while the horse is sweaty after riding. I don’t use my other cooler anymore after I got this.

My final conclusion is that both me and Mr.Grumpy are super happy with the rug and use it everyday.

Would I recommend it?

I find it very difficult to say if I would recommend it. It has definitely worked for Mr.Grumpy, but due to the steep price I’m afraid to recommend it as it’s pretty shitty if people pay the price and it doesn’t work. I know some stores lend it out for a week so you can test it yourself before buying. I would recommend to do that if you find it too expensive like I did in the beginning.  You can buy it at Epplejeck for 168 euro.

Dear Santa

It’s officially less then a month till christmas. Which means thats its less then a month till Santa comes around. There is a few things that I hope will lay under my christmas tree. Even if I need to buy it myself 😉

  1. Equiline Helm and boots bag

Since I hopefully will be starting competitions in January this bag would be perfect. They actually don’t sell it in the Netherlands as far as I could find, but you can find it online here.

2. Eskadron Platinum Sweat rug

I’ve been wanting this rug since I first laid my eyes on the collection, but considering Mr.Grumpy has enough rugs from here to Tokyo I haven’t managed to find an excuse yet that would justify me buying it. Can be found here.

3. Eskadron Fetlock boots

I have the front leg versions of these ones, but not the backlegs hence why their on the list. Can be bought here.

4. Clincher browband

I don’t know how long I’ve looked for the right clincher browband and yet I haven’t found the perfect one that I want except for one that doesn’t get made anymore. But this one comes pretty close. Can be bought here(I didn’t come up with the price, I know its outrageous).

5. Schockemohle Colerado Stirrup leather

When I bought my saddle it came with new stirrups and stirrup leather. The only issue is that the leather is so useless, its really difficult to change the length if you are already sitting on the horse, so I am looking for some new ones. These ones from Schockemohle are pretty nice. Can be bought here.

6. Amerigo x Mattes dressage girth

In all honesty I should have just bought this one instead of the BR one, so now its on the christmas list(probably forever as I just realised the leather girth alone is 250 euro…). Love that it comes in black. The only thing is that you will have to buy the girth as well as the fur. Girth can be bought here and fur here.

So, that was my christmas list. Considering my family doesn’t have anything to do with horses, nor do they read this blog I will probably have to purchase it all by myself. haha.

Vestrum Equestrian

Now, before you read further, I will warn you. That woolen rug below costs a lovely 370 euro… so don’t blame me if you fall in love and can’t afford it.

Vestrum Equestrian is a brand I’ve started seeing popping up here and there lately. It has this Gucci feel to it and the prices definitely makes you feel like its Gucci. It hails from Italy and as far as I know it can only be bought at Koole ruitersport and Hypostore here in the Netherlands. They have performance clothing like competition jackets, normal equestrian clothes as well as bags and accessories for dogs and horses. Below you can see some of the selection they have.

I personally wouldn’t dare to put a 370 euro rug on Mr.Grumpy, but I guess if you have so much money that you can spend that amount on a rug you don’t care.

Just put a rug on it

We have officially reached that time of the year where you don’t know if you should put a rug on it or not. For the first time this autumn I put a cooler rug on Mr.Grumpy after excersize tonight. He looked like a rained out cat after the lesson so he needed it before I put on the summer sheet.
He is currently loosing all of his coat again, so I am kinda hoping that if I now put a summer sheet on him at night he will continue shedding. Guess I will have to wait and see if it works.
Tonight’s lesson was hard work. It’s like he waits for the clock to tick 45 minutes into the lesson and he stars walking like a star. But the first 45 minutes is a work out hell to say the least. Hoping with being consequent that the time will go down little by little and he will walk better earlier in the session. Then his owner doesn’t have to come half dead of him. Haha.

BR Autumn/Winter 2016

br-jacket-winter-2016
BR Jacket Bonsai Ladies / Also available in blue.

Today its official 14 weeks and 2 days till Christmas. What does mean? It means we’re pretty close to shorter nights and colder weather. The only fun thing about going into these darker times for me is that all the different equestrian brands are launching their winter season collections. After having looked through a couple of different ones it seems that the main colors we can expect this winter is burgundy and blue. The first collection I want to share with you is the new season from BR. They’ve got some really nice stuff in their line for this season, below you can see some of the pieces I found. If you want to check out the whole line, you can do so here.

BR Riding breeches Poplar ladies full seat
BR Riding breeches Poplar ladies knee

Looking through the line I am happy to see there is less and less bling bling on the breeches. These are also available in blue. These have loads of elestane in them which means they should be really comfortable and fit many sizes.

Saddle pad Passion Larch and Passion Almond.

I’ve always really liked the saddle pads from BR as they are of good quality, ok priced and nice colors. New this winter is the saddle pad Larch which has shock-absorbing pads to make it more comfortable for the horses back.

Boot bag passion – 4 EH winter gloves – Groom bag passion

I love my bootbag and cap bag from BR. They both come at an affordable price and looks and feels really nice. No scratches on my cap or boots for that matter at all. So can definitely recommend the boot bag to you. I’ve never tried  BR gloves, but these seem really nice. Comes with a better grip as well.

  1. Woolen rug with neck, 2. Rain rug , 3. Stable rug.

How comfy and nice doesn’t that woolen rug look? Love that it comes with a neck considering Mr.Grumpy needs that in the winter.
Overall I think its a really nice collection, what I like the most with BR is the good quality at affordable prices. Did you see anything nice?

Walker rugs

shamrock_walker_navy_silver_663

Since the Netherlands is truly showing itself from its most beautiful side today(irony- its been raining all day), I remembered that I need to buy a walker rug for when I lunge Mr.Grumpy in the rain. Generally I find walker rugs such a first world problem product, but for Mr.Teddybear Grumpy they do come in handy. In the autumn/winter it takes so long for him to dry because of his long coat(he cant be shaved either because he’s a dramaqueen) so I end up spending ages at the stable literally looking at him dry so I can put on his winter rug. Yes I do know I can put hay in between, but I’m a bit particular about him being dry before I leave. So the solution is for him not to get to wet, aka a walker rug. I’ve had a look around, and there definitely are many different ones depending on what you want. Below you can find a wide selection of them including the price and links to were to buy them:
