Helsinki for the day

Ola ola,

Yesterday I flew to Helsinki to have a meeting with a client. I had never been to Finland before so was really excited to see if it was similar to Norway in anyway or not.

The minute I landed it felt a bit like being home. So much nature and a much more relaxed atmosphere then the Netherlands. I also had the best burger I’ve ever had. If you ever get to go you should check out Louylo at the harbor. Unfortunately I couldn’t enjoy Finland for long as I am already back in the Netherlands.

Grumpy wasn’t meant to have a day off today, but my head was a bit fried after a very long meeting and travel, so I went to cuddle, try out a new rug(yes, again haha) and a walk in the walker. It’s always so good walking into the stable after a long day and smell the horses. Or is that a terribly cheesy thing to say? Haha

Superman to the rescue

Ola ola,

So. You have those rugs that I deem necessary, like the winter rugs and raincoat. Then you have those that you buy because you see it on sale and buy it while you do not really need it.

This walker rug from Rambo – Horseware was definitely one of those buys. I saw it on sale this summer and for some reason I really felt I needed it. Since it was pouring down today I took it for a test ride when walking to the lunging arena and walking about afterwards. To be honest the rug is really well made as you can expect from Horseware. It got a fleece inside and a water repellant outer layer. I didn’t dare to lunge with it as I’m afraid Grumpy would get his feet in the surcingles. Although its nice, it’s not a rug that you need at all. I do like the way it makes Grumpy look like he is wearing a superman coat tough. hoho

On another note, Grumpy was really stiff and slow today. I can’t really blame him as it has been such bad weather and it suddenly went from a decent warmth to really freaking cold. Tomorrow he has a day off with cuddles and walks before we start training properly for the next two weeks before I can ride again. Almost there, almost there!

And suddenly winter came

Ola ola,

You know that feeling when you lay down in bed after changing the sheets? That lovely warm and clean feeling.

I wonder if Grumpy felt the same way today when I put on his clean winter rug. Hopefully he can appreciate the cleanness as much as me. Just such a shame that tomorrow I will come to the stable and there will be various poop stains on it again….

I bought this Bucas rug for Grumpy last year, which I do truly enjoy. The only thing is that it does rub a bit on his mane, so need to find a way to implement a little fake fur there. If anyone got tricks or tips on how to fix it, please let me know!

By the way, I’ll leave you with some important information.  Right now its 123 days till 1st of march. Hopefully by then we will be back to warmer times again. I.cant.wait!

Bucas Recuptex Light

Ola,

If you have followed my blog for a while you would know that I really like the Recuptex rugs from Bucas. I bought mine last year because Grumpy was struggling a lot with stiffness, which definitely became better with using the rug regularly.

The only downside to the rug is that I do find it to warm to put on after training as your horse keep sweating or for use in the summer. There were quite a lot of people mentioning this to Bucas and they seemed to have listened. They have recently released a new version of it called Light. The only main difference on this rug compared to mine is that the sides are made of Mesh, so it’s a very breathable rug that will still keep the blood flowing. Definitely a smart upgrade of them. If you want to buy it, it’s available at Dochorse for 160,-.

Favorite day of the week

Ola,

Ah, how good is Sunday? I wish I could have Sunday everyday. Just need to win the lottery first. Haha

Today Grumpy has finally trained properly for the first time in 2.5 weeks. I started noticing towards the end of the week that the energy was coming back and he wanted to work again. As he has lost quite some muscles on his back and overall I took him on the longe in hope that, that will build them up quicker. As we are just going to build up slowly and as stamina isn’t the greatest we did a 20 min workout today. Mostly focused on walking and trotting.

His mud fever/grease heel is still there and his left back leg is the worst one which is still pretty thick. It did open up a bit when working, but it’s either one or the other evil. I can’t have him lose more muscles now. Luckily he let me clean it and put on cream very gently. It’s nice to see he is trusting me after these last weeks of drama. Now he patiently waits to move his leg till have put on all the cream needed. So we are going in the right direction I think. It must mean it hurts less if I’m allowed to touch it.

It’s currently to warm for his 150g rug, so he is now wearing the Bucas Shamrock power at night, which seems to be giving the perfect temperature. It has the stay-dry inside to ensure all spots are kept dry for the rainrot.

Tomorrow we are finally going back to lessons. Not only he needs it, but my head as well. Haha.

Have a nice Sunday!

Things you probably didn’t realize

There is a lot of obvious things you see and do, but never realized the reason for it and how it might affect your horse. Makes sense no?  Haha, let me just get into it. Just a disclaimer, this info was found after thorough research on the Internet.

*Drying your horse with a sweat scraper after a shower.

So I used to think that people would dry their horse quickly because it was annoying to get the water everywhere when you walked back to the stable and you wanted it to dry quicker. However it’s actually really important that you dry your horse in the summer with a sweat scrape if you shower it after working. If you don’t the water will lay on the horses coat and become extremely warm as the heat from the horse will heat it up and the horse itself is generally not equipped to deal with such heat.

*Everyone else has put a rug on so must I.

You might think that it’s not a problem that your horse is sweating a bit under its rug, but nothing is further from the truth. A too warm horse left over a certain amount of time can get colic and even an heart attack. So make sure your horse is not too hot under its winter rug.

*Ever wondered what those white spot on your horses legs or around the back are?

Let’s say you have a black horse, and you’ve had fetlock boots on and you’ve started noticing that there is white patches  starting to appear on the area of the boots. This is because when you put too much pressure on a horses coat for too long it kills the pigmentation in the hair and in return you get white hair. You’ll see this a lot around illfitting saddles and boots that are put on too tight.

*I’ll just quickly put saddlegrease on my boots.

Eek, do you want too soft boots that start slouching? No? Then start using bootcleaner and care instead.

Hope you learned something new. Hoho

New rug : Bucas Celtic

This morning I woke up by my uncle sending a picture of my niece riding on a horse for the first time. Aaaw. So cute when children sit on horses with the biggest smile ever.

When people ask my what I miss the most about Norway is,  then that’s it. Not being able to see my little niece and nephew grow up is sometimes hard. My niece is the coolest little girl and I would love bringing her to the stable. But luckily I get to go home now and then to see them.

After waking up I  started calling around to about 6 different tack-stores to try to find the Bucas Celtic medium rug. Me and Boyfriend had nothing to do today so I wanted to just go and buy it instead of buying it online. But it all turned into a total mission and we ended up taking a nice  road trip to the north of the country to a really small town where they had it at a store called Zeeman dier en paard. This horse obsession is really bringing me all around the country. You need info about a tack shop? I got you. Haha

Today’s shopping. Musli, Equishine and rug.

Afterwards we went back to Grumpy for a fitting session.

Me and Juul having a in depth convo if the rug fitted or not. Haha. Grumpy couldn’t be less interested and just continued eating.

The reason why I’m buying the Bucas rugs is :

1. Because they have the stay dry inside which means you can lay them directly on your horse after working out eventough he is sweating. Grumpy sweats a lot in the winter and you can sit and wait for an hour for him to dry otherwise.

2. Because of this stay dry it means the sweat doesn’t go into the rug and make it cold which again affect his back as his muscles become stiffer when he is cold.

3. They last long and this one have a 3 year garantee which means I don’t have to buy another rug for a long time.

I now have a 150gram stable rug, then a 300 gram liner and a turnout rug. Which means I’m set. After having researched and thought about it for a week I seriously don’t want to see or read about rugs for a very very long time. Now I’m going to go and eat bread and drink water for the rest of the month. 💸

Have a nice eve!

Entering annoying times

Ola,

You gotta excuse my overly negative header, but let me explain.

This morning I showed up at the stable around 08.25 and let me tell you. It was cold. Very very cold. Which means the most difficult question of this period of the year arises:

Should you put a rug on it or not?

Grumpy is the biggest diva I know. So he gets cold really fast and then puts on a thick bearsuit. However its way to warm during the day to have a rug on him the whole day, and I don’t have the possibly to get to the stable in the morning to take it off. Oh the drama. Today I put on his summer rug when I was there in the afternoon so that he has something on overnight. I did see that it will drop to 10c tonight tough, so will have to take out the rugs from the shed I guess. The ultimate reminder that the autumn is coming!

Our ride today wasn’t anything to write home about. He was really forward, which is something good, but then I need to learn to use that positive energy. Today we were a bit all over the place. Luckily we were riding alone, so no one noticed. haha.

Tomorrow its time for another lesson!  Have a good Sunday eve 🙂

Bucas Freedom / pink lightning

Ola,

So this might not be the color I would choose for Mr.Grumpy(he would possibly try to kill me), but I do find it cute.

Bucas has 3 new pink rugs for the spring which is the freedom turnout, freedom summer rug and freedom fly rug. Freedom is the cheapest line that Bucas carries, but it still comes with the Bucas quality. The rugs are now in stores.

Freedom turnout – 84.50 euro

Freedom fly rug with neck – 74.50 euro.

Can we just take a minute to admire this horrible photoshop job done by Bucas? Is that really the promo photo you want flying around on the internet? Pfft. At least don’t cut off one leg. Haha.

Freedom summer rug 54.50 euro.

Pre selection for Dutch dressage championship

Today when I came to the stable Mr.Grumpy had a sweet little surprise for me.

He had decided that his layer rug was not the one for him so he tore it apart for me.

Thanks buddy, exactly what I wanted to spend my money on this month after paying the saddle fitter, farrier and later this month dentist for you…. horses sometimes… 🙄😂

Anyway, I didn’t have much time to think about it as I was going with Lotte and the owners of the beautiful Fries Wilma B, Ronald and Carolien to the pre selection of the Dutch dressage championship. Lotte was to compete in the class L1 against 25 other people.

We arrived well in time to take a look around the stable and check out the competition. There were some really good horses riding in between all the contestants.

It soon turned out that loads of the horses had issues with the arena. The stable is notoriously known for being a problematic one as there for example today, were heaters in the corners and people screaming or making noises from the other side of the wall in the middle of your run.

Lotte did two really good runs, but in the first one Wilma suddenly decided to jump to the right in the canter as someone hit the wall on the other side. As Lotte is a seasoned rider she went on with her run as well as she could and the rest went totally fine. The second one went by the book with some minor things here and there, but not much to put a finger on.

As it was 3 hours remaining till the last contestants where done and you would hear if you had won or not we took Wilma back to the stable before riding back again to wait for the results. Of course you hope to win, but in the car there I don’t think either of us was thinking about how it would end. We didn’t have time to see many of the other contestants so it could go either way.

However the image below says it all. Lotte became first in both runs and is now trough to the region championship. How cool isn’t that?

Super proud of you girl. Well done! 💪🏻👌🏻

Considering that Wilma is only a year under the saddle and Lotte was up against some really good riders, this is quite the achievement.

It was a really nice experience to see how the championship worked and how different the levels are of the riders. In my head I went there thinking that there would only be insanely good riders, but there were riders from all walks of life. Some of the horses though. Man, I need to win the lottery! Hopefully the next one I will be able to compete in as well.
