I don’t think I’m the only who is loving the weather we are having right now.
13 degrees and sun instead of 0 degrees and rain. I can also notice on Grumpy that his body is less stiff when it’s a bit warmer.
Today I could finally have a lesson outside, which is not only good for him, but oh how lovely is it to have some fresh air?
For a while we’ve been a bit in a winter dip. I couldn’t find my grove when riding and he kept doing things so that he didn’t have to work, like running insanely fast when lunging or bucking in canter when riding. Today was the first time in a long time when it felt like he could handle it all again.
It reminded me how much I actually do love riding. I’m finally seeing an upwards line in our riding which feels really good.
Now, let’s just hope the spring has come here to stay. I’m not going back to 0 degrees!
How bad isn’t it that our mood gets so affected by our riding?
For the past month me and Grumpy has been on different planets. He went left when I wanted to go right and he stopped when I wanted to go forward. It was not sexy, not sexy at all.
Somewhere a long the lines I realized that I had been sleeping. The warm weather made me give him some more days off then I should have and generally I had been lazy. So I decided to get my shit together, in lack of different words and start working again.
Today I finally got a bit of payback for my work. For the last month it felt like I had to carry Grumpy, while today he decided to use his own legs. What a feeling. When he decides to do that, I don’t need to look like a wild monkey on his back either and can focus on sitting a bit better and hold my hands where they should be.
So back to my initial sentence. How happy don’t you feel when you’ve had a good ride? Gosh. I would almost pay to have a good ride every day. Haha
I must admit that this is the first time I have ever seen a half legged leggings for horse riding. I can’t think of any other brand that has done this until now. But Euro-star has.
The idea behind this legging is that when it turns summer and the weather gets to warml, you will have a shorter legged riding breech that keeps you ventilated. This particular pair is called Venti 3/4 legging. So instead of having a full pair, you would only need to wear socks up until your knee.
What do you think? Would this be something you would use? I must admit I don’t use such leggings for normal training, so I doubt I’ll spend my money on these ones.
It’s innovation time again. This time it’s coming from HV Polo with their correction pro top.
This top is meant to remind you to keep your shoulders back and your back straight with putting a slight pressure on it.
I’ll be the first to admit that I could use something like that. Whether or not it works I don’t dare to say, but my favorite breeches are from the HV polo pro range, so I know the top will definitely be of good quality. It comes in a breathable material and is figure slimming for those of us with a few extra pounds.
Can be bought at Epplejeck for 70 euro. There is a normal version as well as a show version.
Have you tried it? Does it work?
I remember when I told my teachers I was going to move to the Netherlands. One told me that I wouldn’t realize what I had around me until it was gone.
And he was right. I keep forgetting how beautiful norwegian nature is, till I land in Norway again. This weekend I went to celebrate my grandmother’s 80 birthday in my hometown. A place where the fjords, mountains and sea meets.
If I could only wake up to this everyday. It’s a shame it’s literally in the middle of nowhere haha.
Oh well. I missed my Grumpy buddy this weekend when I was gone. Unfortunately the saddle didn’t solve the problem with his bucking so I’ve now called the vet to come and give him a proper sports massage. From what I can see there is something stuck in his left shoulder which makes sense when I think about where the saddle was laying bad. So until the vet comes around next Tuesday we will lunge a lot and go for a lot of walks as I don’t want to pressure whatever is laying wrong more.
Time is flying by at the moment. Last weekend was my birthday weekend, so a lot of time was spent with friends and family instead of blogging.
In the meanwhile Grumpy has settled into his new home well. He is being a lot happier and relaxed at the moment, which makes me feel happy and that my decision to move was right.
Today we had our first lesson at the new stable. Was definitely needed as my riding had gone south the last week. It was a bit harsh going from riding a lot of group lessons to having to decide every ride on my own. Too used to having someone tell me what to do, but now we are on our way and will try to do private lessons twice a week, as long as the wallet can afford it.
Homework for this week is to make quicker decisions on what to do when he lift his heads up and try to control his shoulders more plus being a consequent rider. So that’s going to be what I will work at this week.
Happy Monday to you all. We are one day closer to the weekend. Wohoo
Hope everyone has had a lovely Sunday. Mine was spent doing horse stuff.
Grumpy is slowly getting used to his new place. He is a lot calmer in his stable now, and he is used to the new walker and paddock.
Only our riding is going completely south at the moment. He is noticing that I’m being careful because of the new surroundings and he is taking full advantage of it. I’m trying to tell myself it’s just a matter of time and getting used to things.
Today we had the entire arena to ourself. I tried to make something out of our ride, but mnjaa lets just say he got a very relaxing day. To keep focus I’ve decided to give myself some goals for the coming period:
- When I get anxious, I’m not going to stop, but push trough when it comes to riding
- When I get anxious in handling Grumpy, I’m going to stay calm and not pull him close to me. I’ve been working on this for the last few days and I’m so happy it’s working out well. There has been no circling piaffe’s so far.
- Work on my sit. As my boyfriend has taken some photos last few days I’ve seen how bad it really is and I need to get more straight
- Building more muscles on Grumpy with riding him trough his whole body and focus on getting the backlegs active
- Having fun. I worry to much, this is a hobby and should be fun, so I’m going to slow it down a notch and just have fun with it.
So that’s my goals for the coming months. I’m going to try to have boyfriend take photos once a week so I can see the progress. Going to be interesting to see if there is any difference in a couple of months.
Ah, how good is Sunday? I wish I could have Sunday everyday. Just need to win the lottery first. Haha
Today Grumpy has finally trained properly for the first time in 2.5 weeks. I started noticing towards the end of the week that the energy was coming back and he wanted to work again. As he has lost quite some muscles on his back and overall I took him on the longe in hope that, that will build them up quicker. As we are just going to build up slowly and as stamina isn’t the greatest we did a 20 min workout today. Mostly focused on walking and trotting.
His mud fever/grease heel is still there and his left back leg is the worst one which is still pretty thick. It did open up a bit when working, but it’s either one or the other evil. I can’t have him lose more muscles now. Luckily he let me clean it and put on cream very gently. It’s nice to see he is trusting me after these last weeks of drama. Now he patiently waits to move his leg till have put on all the cream needed. So we are going in the right direction I think. It must mean it hurts less if I’m allowed to touch it.
It’s currently to warm for his 150g rug, so he is now wearing the Bucas Shamrock power at night, which seems to be giving the perfect temperature. It has the stay-dry inside to ensure all spots are kept dry for the rainrot.
Tomorrow we are finally going back to lessons. Not only he needs it, but my head as well. Haha.
Have a nice Sunday!
There is a lot of obvious things you see and do, but never realized the reason for it and how it might affect your horse. Makes sense no? Haha, let me just get into it. Just a disclaimer, this info was found after thorough research on the Internet.
*Drying your horse with a sweat scraper after a shower.
So I used to think that people would dry their horse quickly because it was annoying to get the water everywhere when you walked back to the stable and you wanted it to dry quicker. However it’s actually really important that you dry your horse in the summer with a sweat scrape if you shower it after working. If you don’t the water will lay on the horses coat and become extremely warm as the heat from the horse will heat it up and the horse itself is generally not equipped to deal with such heat.
*Everyone else has put a rug on so must I.
You might think that it’s not a problem that your horse is sweating a bit under its rug, but nothing is further from the truth. A too warm horse left over a certain amount of time can get colic and even an heart attack. So make sure your horse is not too hot under its winter rug.
*Ever wondered what those white spot on your horses legs or around the back are?
Let’s say you have a black horse, and you’ve had fetlock boots on and you’ve started noticing that there is white patches starting to appear on the area of the boots. This is because when you put too much pressure on a horses coat for too long it kills the pigmentation in the hair and in return you get white hair. You’ll see this a lot around illfitting saddles and boots that are put on too tight.
*I’ll just quickly put saddlegrease on my boots.
Eek, do you want too soft boots that start slouching? No? Then start using bootcleaner and care instead.
Hope you learned something new. Hoho
Man, I wonder how many hours I’ve spent at the glove department at tackstores. Ok, I’m exaggerating a little, but I was born with rather small hands, which in return means that most gloves are to big.
A while ago I needed to find some riding gloves for my cute little nephew and since his hands are about as big as mine I started trying our various ones at the store. I’ve tried so many Roeckl gloves, but never found one that fit, untill that time. To my surprise their cheapest glove fit so nicely! I’ve always used the Ariat tek-grip one, but it seems that they’ve changed the sizing and it no longer fits me. Did you ever have that your mom forced you to wear too big tights under skirts? And they kept sliding down and giving you diaper ass. For some reason that’s what the Ariats remind me of now. Haha.
Anyhow, if you want to check them out yourself, it’s the Roeckl Madison and they sell for about 20-25€. I bought mine at Horze with a discount, so paid 15€ which isn’t bad for Roeckl gloves.
