Superman to the rescue

Ola ola,

So. You have those rugs that I deem necessary, like the winter rugs and raincoat. Then you have those that you buy because you see it on sale and buy it while you do not really need it.

This walker rug from Rambo – Horseware was definitely one of those buys. I saw it on sale this summer and for some reason I really felt I needed it. Since it was pouring down today I took it for a test ride when walking to the lunging arena and walking about afterwards. To be honest the rug is really well made as you can expect from Horseware. It got a fleece inside and a water repellant outer layer. I didn’t dare to lunge with it as I’m afraid Grumpy would get his feet in the surcingles. Although its nice, it’s not a rug that you need at all. I do like the way it makes Grumpy look like he is wearing a superman coat tough. hoho

On another note, Grumpy was really stiff and slow today. I can’t really blame him as it has been such bad weather and it suddenly went from a decent warmth to really freaking cold. Tomorrow he has a day off with cuddles and walks before we start training properly for the next two weeks before I can ride again. Almost there, almost there!

The Rambo dry rug drama

You know that feeling when you finally can sleep long and you wake up at 6 am totally happy and rested? Well, yesterday I had that. Today my alarm was at 8 am and I woke up with the most grumpy and tired face ever. Like only a proper woman can be;)

The whole they have been spent sleeping and going to the barn twice to let Grumpy out and in the walker. I’ve also tried to take on the job of cleaning my Rambo dry rug. I love the rug, but gees every single little thing gets stuck on it.

I took it home to try out different ways of cleaning it. Magic brush, cat hair brush, sticky tape and vacuum cleaner, but I simply can’t get it clean enough to be able to get it into the washing machine. So I stood there on my balcony with a face as long as a horse and kept trying to get it out.

I’m officially defeated.

So I sat down at the dinner table and had a good old whine about it, untill I started laughing of my first world problems. If my only problems is to loose wheight and cleaning a rug, then I really don’t have that much to complain about.

Tomorrow I’ll buy some duck tape and hopefully that should help. But be aware, if you want this rug, make sure that you know it’s a nightmare to clean.

Who forgot to turn on the heater?

Ok, let’s get straight down to business. Who forgot to put on that heater called global warming? I am officially freezing my toes off.  “Yes, my jokes are dry, hoho”

Mr.Grumpy is currently wrapped in like a little Christmas gift. He seems to be warm and happy under two layers though. I was afraid I wouldn’t have a warm enough rug since he ruined his baselayer rug last week, but this seem to work for now. Currently using 450 gram Rambo rug with a Rambo dryrug.

It might be all in my head, but it seems like his new food is giving him more energy. Yesterday we tried going for a walk together, but it quickly turned into a Mr.grumpy walking me situation so the walk didn’t last long.

Today I had to ride instead of lunging because the ground is frozen outside. When riding I could definitely notice he was more forward, but he spent all his energy on hating this cute little pony that was also in the arena. Even if it was like 15 meters away he wanted to attack him. So guessing that’s a side effect of the new energy. However I rather want that and just learn to ride with it, then him being lazy and energyless.

Tomorrow I am riding in a lesson again, so then we can work on channeling the energy.

Hope you have a nice evening!

What to buy on sale

January is known for being the huge sales month in many countries. In the Netherlands several of the largest equestrian sites have their winter sales on at the moment.

I personally love sales(why wouldn’t you want to buy something for less money. Haha), but I do know there are people that find them to messy or don’t want to buy “outdated” product. However there are certain things that are really smart to buy on the big sales:

Saddle pads

I can’t remember the last time I bought a saddle pad at full price. I personally prefer the euro star pads, but at 70 euro I find them too expensive. So I buy a couple of them when the sales is on instead. Like this one for example:

Kingsland victor saddle pad. Normally 80,- now 40,- at Divoza

Show shirts

I don’t why, but seems that someone decided that showshirts should be redicolous expensive eventough their full of polyester(my favorite fabric -not). Show shirts change little season by season, so you can save quite a lot on buying them at the large sales in winter and summer. For example the ones at Kingsland haven’t changed all year. So why not buy them a bit cheaper?

Kingsland classic show shirt. Normally 45,- now 35,- at De Kroo.

Rugs

Winter rugs/ turnout rugs are definitely one of the most expensive things we can buy for our horses. Generally the rugs don’t change much from year to year. So if you know that you need a new one next year it can be smart to buy them on the winter sales instead of at the beginning of autumn. At the moment you can even get Bucas rugs up to 30% off which doesn’t happen a lot.

Bucas 300 gram smartex winter turnout rug – normally 255,- now 178, euro- at Dochorses

Halters

You always need halters and saving some dollars here and there on them is never bad. Their certainly not expensive, but buying them at 50% off feels better then buying them at full price no?

Schockemöhl Tennessee. Normally 17,95, now 8,98,- at Epplejeck

Boots

You need boots all year around, but generally they don’t go on sale as much the rest of the year as they do now. So why not buy some at 30-50% as a delayed Christmas gift for yourself?

Petrie Melbourne – normally 299,- now 199,- at Ooteman

Here you got a list of the sales going on at the moment or coming up:
Divoza – up to 50% off

Ooteman – special sale starts 15 January, for now 30% off

Dochorses – up to 30% off on rugs from Rambo, Amigo, Bucas

Schockemöhl – 50% off certain items

Epplejeck – winter sale with up to 50% starts Sunday 8 January

Freezing nosetip

Today when laying far underneath my woolen blanket after dinner, I really felt like raising the white flag and just wave “it’s to bloody cold to go outside, I’m staying underneath here.”

Unfortunately owning a horse comes with some responsibilities. So after a bit of nagging I managed to get up and into the car. It is bloody cold tough. Mr.Grumpy is currently wearing a 450 gram stable rug together with a 300 gram neck. Even he was so cold today he didn’t flinch an eye when I put it on him again after training. Generally he goes into full diva mode and if your standing at the wrong position you’ll get a tooth or two into you. But today he was like hell yes, bring on the blanket. Ok, he didn’t actually say or portray that, but would be cool if he did. Haha

He even has a thicker neck on than this right now, but didn’t have a photo of it.

Lesson went so so, he was very frisky and strong, wouldn’t really take the bit that easy. I have an ugly tendency to become extremely stiff in my shoulders when he does that and I also forget to breath at the same time. Awesome combo. I’m currently very good at holding my breath, which we all know is a very useful competency to have.

As it was way to cold to hang around at the stable I hurried home to lay underneath my blanket again. Spending some time with my new little kitten. She’s so adorable!

Now we can celebrate that the “worst day” of the week is almost over 😉 onto the rest of it!

Winter stable rugs guide 2016/2017

Even tough I would like summer to last forever, it unfortunately doesn’t and winter is upon us. The weather man even told me that it will be as cold as 4c during the night next week. This means its time to look at winter rugs.

One can become dizzy when you look at all the rugs at the marked at the moment. There is so many different ones, depending on what you need. In this post I have chosen to look at winter stable rugs in different prices and grams. It will start at 50 gram and move upwards.

Here you can see a small temperature guide which can give you  an indication on when to put on which rugs.

turnoutwardrobeguide

Please note that some of the rugs below have the option to be combinated with a liner, but I have chosen not to include this info and only focus on that specific rug. However if you are interested in these, then you should check out the websites of Bucas and Horseware as these are the two brands offering this at the moment. I personally do not like it as I’ve found that the liners end up sliding and not laying well.

I’ve chosen not to say which ones are best as everyone has a different preference, though Bucas and Horseware is known for being the best in the business, but it depends how nice your horse is to his/her rug and what type of style and needs you have. I personally use mostly Horseware Amigo as these fit well on Mr.Grumpy and price/duration is good. Of course there are plenty more brands and rugs out there then the rugs below, but these are the most common ones at the moment. By the way, surprises me that neither Eskadron or BR rugs are easy to find, they are available, but I’ve looked at 10 different sites and none of these were selling rugs from these two brands. Get your game on guys.

I will by the way do turnout rug guide for those horses living outside or being outside a lot in another post.

Just put a rug on it

We have officially reached that time of the year where you don’t know if you should put a rug on it or not. For the first time this autumn I put a cooler rug on Mr.Grumpy after excersize tonight. He looked like a rained out cat after the lesson so he needed it before I put on the summer sheet.
He is currently loosing all of his coat again, so I am kinda hoping that if I now put a summer sheet on him at night he will continue shedding. Guess I will have to wait and see if it works.
Tonight’s lesson was hard work. It’s like he waits for the clock to tick 45 minutes into the lesson and he stars walking like a star. But the first 45 minutes is a work out hell to say the least. Hoping with being consequent that the time will go down little by little and he will walk better earlier in the session. Then his owner doesn’t have to come half dead of him. Haha.

Horseware new disc closure

Last week the big horse fair Spoga was held in Cologne. All the large horse brands goes there to show off their new product releases for the winter.
One of the interesting news was the new disc closure that Horseware will be adding to their rugs. Instead of the regular closure the new one will be in the form of a disc on the chest as you can see below :

Would be interesting to see how this works in real life as I guess you can then close it from both sides instead of one. The idea behind it is that it’s supposed to remove the pressure form the front of the chest of the horse, provide easier movement and let the horse graze more easily. Below you can read some facts:

I’m personally a big fan of the Horseware rugs, so hopefully this will make them even better. The only issue I see is that Mr.Grumpy hates rugs and I’m guessing with this closure it will take a bit more time to close them aka more time to get bitten by him. Haha.
You will already see this closure on some of this winters rugs.

Review: Rambo Dry Rug Cooler

In the last half year I’ve bought a lot of new stuff for my horse, like rugs, saddle, tendon boots and so forth. Before I buy anything I always go on the internet to see reviews from other people regarding that specific product that I want.

However I’ve noticed that in the horse world I hardly manage to find any, specially if the product is new. Therefore I thought I would start reviewing the products that I buy, so other people like me might find it useful.

The first product that I will be reviewing is the new Rambo Dry rug cooler. I’ve had mine for a couple of months now, so I feel I can give a proper review about it.

This is what the producer says about the product : “The Rambo Dry Rug is a fantastic microfiber towelling cloth rug with a smart hideaway neck hood. It dries your horse in record time, absorbing moisture to leave a high gloss and smooth finish to your horse’s coat.  Roll up the neck/hood to dry the mane and neck, roll back into a hideaway pocket when not needed.”

My opinion about the rug:

In the winter season my horse becomes a proper hairy bear, but because he is afraid of the shaving machine I unfortunately cannot shave him. This means that every time we have a proper ride I have to wait forever for him to dry. The cooler rug I used just didn’t cut it, so I decided to start looking for a new one and came across this one after searching for hours on the internet. At first I didn’t believe the that it would really dry my horse that fast, but was willing to try.

I must say I am super satisfied with this rug.The first time I had it in my hands I found the fabric super weird as it feels like a bathrobe kind of fabric. However it definitely dries my horse super quickly, as fast as 20 minutes at times and it leaves him with such a shiny glossy coat. The only downside with the rug is that because its light grey, it easily gets dirty, and if your horse rolls in the stable everything sticks to it because of its special fabric.

Positive:

  • Dries Mr.Grumpy fast
  • Easy to clean in the washing machine
  • Does make your horse look cute (not important, but who doesn’t like that.haha)

Negative:

  • If you’re horse is a roller in his stable, everything sticks to this rug. Mine did it once and I had to spend an hour taking of the hay again.
  • You can roll up the neck piece, but you need to do it neatly, otherwise it doesn’t look very nice.
  • Price. Not everyone can afford or want to spend 85 euro on a cooler.

You can buy the rug HERE and HERE.

Ps: My horse is 167 cm, and uses the size medium. The rug cannot be too big as its supposed to be in close contact with the coat.
